2005
State Champions |
|
|
|
Saturday, October 22, 2005 - The
2005 GISA State Cross-Country Meet was held at the Vikings home
course (Georgia Industrial Children's Home), and course knowledge
played a critical role as FPD swept the meet bringing home State
Championships in both the boys and girls races.
The boys defeated Riverside Military
Academy by a score of 41-68 and were led by juniors Scott Cope
and Joby Peake and sophomore Rawson Ridley who
finished 1, 2, and 3 overall. Junior Brandon Suttle
finished 9th to earn All-State Honors. Daniel Socumb, Drew
Wood and Josh Smith added the depth necessary for the
Vikings to win their fourth consecutive State Championship.
The girls team overcame a six point
deficit with a half mile left to defeat Stratford Academy by one
point. Following the race, Coach McDaniel said, "What a
total team effort. With a half mile remaining our girls
decided it was time to win the meet. From that point none of
our girls lost a spot and five of them advanced at least one place.
Unbelievable!"
The FPD JV Boys finished fifth
overall and the JV Girls won a third consecutive State Championship.
Lanier Flanders won the JV Girls race and Katie Scott
(4th) and Hannah Sleight (9th) finished in the top ten
overall. |

On Wednesday, August 31, 2005,
at Stratford Academy. The FPD boys
and girls were victorious over all twenty competing
schools as the boys easily outdistanced the field, scoring 17 points
to second place Stratford's 126. The girls' race was a
thriller, as the Lady Vikings escaped with a two point victory
(55-57) over Stratford. FPD junior Joby Peake was the
overall boys winner (18:04) and Erin Colunga (22:00) finished
second overall in the girls race to lead the girls.
Following the
day's events, Coach McDaniel said, "it was a total team effort for
our boys and girls. The boys swept the first four places and
our fifth (junior Josh Smith) continues to amaze me with his
determination. It's also great to see the girls overcome
Saturday's disappointment by drawing closer to each other and taking
the steps necessary to win the meet. |
