FPD Moves Forward with Lacrosse Program

Development of New Field Begins

MACON, Ga. – First Presbyterian Day School is moving forward with the addition of a middle school lacrosse program and field in preparation for a Spring 2015 team.

FPD currently hosts a youth club lacrosse team that is open to the general public and directed by Coach Mike Simmons. Now in its second season, the club team has twenty-two players, providing a positive outlook for an official middle school team next spring.

FPD Athletic Director Greg Moore says the school is very pleased with the progress of the club team and is adding the field because the interest in lacrosse at FPD substantiates the new program and facilities.

“The new practice field is exciting,” Moore said. “We have been very deliberate in our steps toward adding the lacrosse program, and this venue will mark a major milestone in the program development. The field will not only provide grounds for lacrosse, but additional outdoor space for all of our students as well.”

Currently, the club team practices on the Austin Childers football field with ongoing basic skills training along with practice.  The new field will be located on the west side of George S. Johnson Memorial Stadium adjacent to the home bleachers and will be used for various athletic teams, including football and lacrosse.

The field and its facilities are part of an ongoing capital campaign program, Investing in Our Future, led by FPD’s Advancement Department. The school has selected Appling Brothers as the contractor.

“The new lacrosse/practice field is the final project that will close out FPD’s Investing In Our Future Campaign,” Advancement Director Jennifer Barfield said. “The campaign began four years ago and will round out our athletic facilities with a dedicated space for lacrosse that will be one of the best in middle Georgia.  We are grateful to all of our generous supporters who have helped make this campaign such a great success.”
