American Red Cross Babysitting Training Course

For girls in grades 6 – 9

The purpose of this course is to provide youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely give care for children and infants. Participants will learn basic first aid and safe and appropriate skills for taking care of babies. Participants will also learn how to pick-up and hold an infant or toddler, bottle-feed an infant, spoon-feed an infant, change a diaper, and help a conscious infant or child who is choking.  All participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the class. You must be registered 2 weeks prior to the start of the class. There is a Red Cross minimum number of participants in order for the class to be hosted.

Chess for Kids

For boys and girls in grades 2 – 6

Chess is an old game that can be learned by young children. Waging a war on an 8×8 grid can be fun and carries many benefits for learning and development. Chess players learn to use high-order thinking skills, analyze actions and consequences, and visualize future problems. Students gain insight into the nature of competition and strengthen patience, perseverance and grit. Students in the course will learn basic rules and strategies for playing and completing chess games.

Adventures with Mercy Watson

We will cozy up this winter and read some favorite Mercy Watson tales written by award winning author, Kate DiCamillo. For fun we will create some “piggy crafts,” make character puppets, and play some fun reading games. Ask a friend to join you and come experience some pig-loving fun!

Robot Power

Dash is one of the most powerful robot companions that kids can use to learn, apply and extend their coding knowledge. Packed with sensors and capabilities, kids can program Dash to move, light up, make sounds, avoid obstacles, and even respond to their voice. Come join us as we work collaboratively to solve puzzles, travel through mazes, shoot some hoops and maybe even teach Dash how to play the xylophone.

Junior Robotics

For boys and girls in grades K – 3

Using software while working on PC’s and laptops, elementary school students will program the model builds they craft using our Bricks 4 Kidz model plans and LEGO® Education products. Junior Robotics bridges the physical world, represented by our models, and the virtual world of computers and programming software. It provides a hands-on learning experience that actively involves young students in their own learning process.

See how the world around us works and looks through the eyes of LEGO®. From animals and energy to construction equipment, race cars, and space travel, we’ll explore our world by learning about and building some of the engineering marvels that we encounter every day. Each motorized lesson introduces key terminology related to each build as well as reinforces STEM concepts.

EV3 Robotics

Bricks 4 Kidz utilizes the new EV3 and Mindstorm® technologies, programming and our unique robot models.  Children are introduced to the EV3 graphic programming language, equipping them at an early age to succeed in a technology-based marketplace. STEM concepts and teamwork are combined in this action packed program where kids learn real-life skills while having real-kid fun!

Remote Control Mania

For boys and girls in grades 1 – 5

“Make it Move” is the name of the game at this exciting Bricks 4 Kidz class! Kids will love to see their creations in motion using LEGO® wireless remote controls. In each class, students will use fascinating and challenging LEGO® components to create dynamic vehicles, inventions, machines, and more. As they enjoy the fun of building, students will understand the basic working principles of many ingenious devices that are part of our everyday lives. It’s remote control mania!

Sign Language for Kids

For boys and girls in grades 2 – 6

Learn the basics of American Sign Language utilizing the alphabet, counting, and basic phrases.  Children will learn and practice greetings, short phrases, and at least 100 additional vocabulary words. The classroom setting will provide opportunities for engaging in conversation to improve fluency and build confidence.

SAT Practice Course

For students in grades 10 or 11

Join us for this SAT preparation course led by FPD Director of College Counseling, Brad Thompson, as well as members of the FPD faculty.  Students will take an SAT and go over each section with a teacher. They will also cover how to register, what tests look like, and other helpful information for SAT test takers.
