We continue our Teacher Spotlights by heading over to Middle School! Mrs. Nancy Massey teaches in our sixth grade and is a favorite among our new middle school students. She graduated from Wofford College with a Bachelor’s degree in biology and English, followed by a MEd in Science Education from the University of Georgia.

Who or what inspired you to be a teacher?

Totally the students … I actually was not planning on being a teacher right out of my undergraduate studies, but I was asked to help out as a substitute for someone who was having medical issues.  Guess what?  I loved it and returned to college to get my Master’s Degree in science education!

What do you love most about teaching?

The “ah-ha” or “ewwww” moments that students have when discovering something new in science … it gets me every time!

What do you think is the best part about FPD’s middle school program?

We truly are a big family!  I always tell my students that we can fix anything right there on our 6th grade hallway – no worries!  We share, we love, and we live “big”  in Middle School!

What do you love most about FPD?

As an alum, parent, and employee, FPD truly has been my second family for decades! Just like my own family, FPD supports and cheers me on in every season of life.

What do you think you will take away from these distance learning days?

Early on, Dr. Shealy inspired us with the phrase, “never underestimate the power of a good day.”  He was so right.  I am using that message to steer my actions and choices as a friend, family member, and teacher in these distance learning days.

Beyond the subject matter, what do you hope students will learn from you and your class?

The joy found in all of creation!  What an enormous gift God has given us in the simplicity and complexity of nature!
