Student of the Month: Celebrating Austin West
Surprise quickly turned into excitement for 8th-grader Austin West when Mr. Hall walked into the room and called his name as Student of the Month.
“It scared me at first,” Austin said with a smile. “I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ But then I felt really happy and excited.”
That moment of recognition came as no surprise to his teachers, who consistently describe Austin as a student who leads with both character and commitment.
“Austin is kind, respectful, and consistently brings joy to our classroom. He approaches his work with a positive attitude and is always encouraging to those around him,” said Mrs. Alex Minter, Science Teacher.
Known for his kindness, strong work ethic, and willingness to support others, Austin has made a meaningful impact in the classroom and beyond.
“Austin is a kind and dependable classmate who supports his peers and contributes positively to our learning environment. He has earned the trust of those around him through his character and consistency,” said Mrs. Molly Pearson, Math Teacher.
“He is kind and humble, and he has a quiet but meaningful influence on others. He is always willing to help and brings a positive spirit to our classroom community,” said Mrs. Holly Scott, English Teacher.
When asked what it feels like to hear those kinds of comments, Austin responded simply: “I feel appreciated. It makes me really happy.”
Austin credits his success to a mindset of determination and personal responsibility. “I just try to stay motivated—make my mind up and work hard,” he shared.
He also points to teachers who have helped shape his habits, especially Coach Spear. “She taught me all my study skills,” he said. “She’s amazing.”
Outside the classroom, Austin stays actively involved in theater, football, and basketball. While basketball is his favorite sport, he enjoys football because of the friendships it brings and theater because it pushes him outside of his comfort zone.
When asked what he loves most about FPD, his answer reflects the heart of the school: “How welcoming it is. I feel like everyone is close.”
