lydia gray-websiteFirst Presbyterian Day School’s dance team has been providing spirit and entertainment at Friday night football games, fine arts concerts, and other events since 1988. The team began attending dance competitions shortly afterwards, and has greatly evolved since that time.

Today, FPD has two separate dance teams. The Dance Line & Color Guard performs at Friday night football games with the band, both at halftime with a show and throughout the game with spirit music to support the team. This group is comprised of 6th-12th graders. Team members attend band camp before the school year starts and will sometimes have other skill-improvement clinics in the summer. The final performance for this team involves various styles of dance and takes place at FPD’s Christmas Fine Arts Night.

The Competition Dance Team is comprised of 9th-12th grade students and competes yearly in the Varsity Hip Hop and Varsity Pom categories at the AmeriDance InterNationals in Orlando, FL. This competition takes place in March, and not only gives our team the opportunity to meet dancers and see dance styles from around the country but also teams from such countries as England, Columbia and Puerto Rico as well. The team competes against some of the biggest and most talented teams that exist, and we are proud to say that we have been able to improve our scores every year, even gaining a 1st place win in the Open Dance category in 2008! The team often participates in camps put on by a dance team organization such as the Universal Dance Association or Eastern Cheer and Dance Association, and has always won numerous personal and team awards. We hope to eventually perform at some of the basketball games and attend several competitions each season, culminating with InterNationals. The final performance for the competition team occurs at FPD’s Spring Fine Arts Night.

Tryouts for the dance line & color guard are held in April of each year. Tryouts for the competition dance team are usually held in October, but may vary. Contact Lydia Gray for information about either dance team.
