Kristy Alvarez Tabbed as FPD’s New Head JV Lacrosse Coach
MACON, Ga. – The FPD Athletic Department and Athletic Director Greg Moore announced today, Dec. 9, that Kristy Alvarez has been named the new junior varsity boys head lacrosse coach.
“I’m very thankful for Coach Alvarez, and I’m excited to see her take on a new role in our Athletic Department,” said FPD Athletic Director, Greg Moore. “She has great experience leading a large program, and our hope is that those experiences will provide good building blocks in the growth of our young lacrosse program. Having already held a head coaching position in another sport was a big plus in considering Kristy for this role.”
Alvarez, who currently teaches AP Language and American Literature at the school, is looking forward to taking on the role.
“I’m excited to learn a new sport and it’s a good thing to be around the kids,” Alvarez said. “I’ve already taught a lot of them, so to see them on the field in a different aspect will be fun.”
Although Alvarez has no lacrosse experience, she is no stranger to the coaching scene.
She has served as a head coach for eight years, most recently at AAAAA Kell High School in Marietta, Ga. While there, her softball squads finished with one region title, a region runner-up and advanced to the GHSA State Tournament three out of five years. One of those seasons included a trip to the Elite Eight.
Prior to coaching softball at Kell, Alvarez was the head coach at Central Carrolton High School for three years. Her teams claimed two region titles and advanced to the state tournament twice.
Her overall career record as a head coach is 143-57 in softball, but she has not been limited to just one sport. She was awarded Coach of the Year twice at Central Carrolton and once at Kell.
Throughout her career she’s also helped coach soccer, basketball and volleyball.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Alvarez said. “It’s a fast-paced sport and one that is fun to watch. It’s a great opportunity to build a program that will one day become a varsity sport.”
Alvarez earned a B.A. in English and a Minor in Education from West Georgia University in Carrolton, Ga. while playing softball for the Braves (now currently the Wolves). She also holds a M.Ed. From Berry College.
A graduate of Ridgeland High School in Rossville, Ga., Alvarez was a member of a Lady Panther team that won a state championship while the sport was still in its slow-pitch stage.
“At this stage in our lacrosse program, I think it’s important that the coach be eager to learn new things while at the same time providing great organization and structure for our student-athletes and assistant coaches. If our first meeting with the coaches in our lacrosse program is any indication, the energy going forward will be very positive,” Moore added.
