SAT

Sophomores and juniors are encouraged to take the SAT Reasoning Test in the spring. In order to sharpen their test taking skills, students in these two grades can participate in an SAT Prep class led by FPD faculty. The course is $110 and classes will be held on select evenings in February. The classes are planned so students will be ready for the test on March 5 as well as the ones in May and June.  Even if your child is not taking the SAT this spring, this course will help them in the future. If your child cannot attend all sessions, it would still be worth the time and money.

Juniors will benefit from the review of math, reading and writing strategies since they will soon be applying to colleges and submitting SAT scores for admissions purposes. Sophomores will benefit in two ways. First, it will prepare them for taking the PSAT in the fall of their junior year. With the familiarity, practice and problem solving strategies provided, it will enhance the possibility of scoring at the required qualifying level for National Merit Scholarship competition. Second, the course will better prepare each student for a good score as a sophomore on which to build his or her testing record for college.

SAT Prep Class Dates for 6-session Course
Tuesday         Feb. 9th
Thursday       Feb. 11th
Wednesday    Feb. 17th
Thursday       Feb. 18th
Tuesday         Feb. 23rd
Thursday       Feb. 25th

Each session will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. We have done our best to plan around major school events, but again, even if your child cannot attend all sessions, it would still be worth the time and money. During each session, students will receive instruction for the verbal and math as well as practice test questions.

The purpose of this 12-hour, 6-session SAT course is to offer test familiarity with the SAT, review math concepts and verbal skills expected on the SAT, and to reduce test anxiety associated with this kind of test.  Although we cannot guarantee an increase in scores, test familiarity and practice strengthen that possibility.  Students will rotate through a strategy session and sample test with Brad Thompson, a Math session with Andrew Berndt, and a Verbal session with Kristy Alvarez.

Registration will be on a “first come” basis. Register online through FPD’s Center for Discovery. In order for us to properly prepare, please have your son or daughter sign up before February 5th.  If you have any questions, you can e-mail Brad Thompson at brad.thompson@fpdmacon.org.

To register for the SAT, it is recommended that you register online at www.collegeboard.com.  The basic fee for the SAT Reasoning Test is $54.50.   One note of caution, there is NOT an SAT given during the months of July, August or September.
